News on the RACI Cereal Chemistry Division

Further update

At the RACI Cereal Chemistry Division AGM in 2012 (Crown Plaza Hotel Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Monday 29th August 2012), the following resolution was defeated “Members of the meeting feel that the RACI is the most appropriate and relevant organisation to represent our disciplines”. Given the limited numbers of members who were able to attend the AGM, it was resolved to undertake a survey of all Division members based on RACI membership lists (nearly 300 people). This was carried out in the last two months of 2012, and followed up by a request in the Divisional newsletter for further input during Jan and Feb 2013. This feedback did not support continuation of the Cereal Chemistry Division, in essence because chemistry is no longer seen as the core discipline for cereal science in Australia. Active members of the cereal science community wished to support a professional organisation that was sector-based rather than discipline-based.

Based on this feedback, a Cereal Chemistry Division committee teleconference was held on April 15th, at which the committee agreed that discontinuation of the Division be proposed to RACI, subject to agreement at an AGM of the Cereal Chemistry Division to be held in late August 2013. At a subsequent teleconference on April 29th, this course of action was reaffirmed, with the recommendation that discontinuation of the Division be proposed to be effective Jan 1st 2014. In the meantime, the committee resolved to work with RACI to identify the process steps required, and discuss the future of current Cereal Chemistry Division assets and IP such as the various named awards, standard samples and methods.

At the 2013 AGM to be held at 4 pm on Monday Aug 26th at the Esplanade Hotel, Fremantle, the current committee will propose a motion that the Cereal Chemistry Division of RACI be discontinued as of Jan 1st 2014. A second motion will seek support of members for discussions with RACI to transfer stewardship of awards currently hosted by RACI (including the Guthrie Medal) as well as Standard Methods and Check Samples to an alternative organisation.
